MOSEL 2025: An Epic, Life-Afirming Fireworks Display

Crisis? Genius!

MOSEL 2025: An Epic, Life-Afirming Fireworks Display
The legendary Wehlener Sonnenuhr shortly before the wine harvest

By Frank Ebbinghaus & Stuart Pigott - last revision: 06.05.26

Yesterday it was necessary to test a number of functions that are crucial for the future of this website, therefore Pawel Gruntowski's story appeared with tasting notes only for paying members. This is how things will function in the future, but TEST MONTH IS EXTENDED until our series of reports based on the Mainzer Weinbörse wine trade fair at the end of April is concluded. ONWARDS!

Because of the sheer number of wines to taste Frank Ebbinghaus (FE) and Stuart Pigott (SP) divided this region into two, Frank tasting the Mosel and Stuart tasting the Saar & Ruwer. Normally, we wouldn’t publish this many tasting notes in one story, but it's TOO EXCITING NOT TO!

The current global wine crisis has hit the Mosel harder than most places on Planet Wine because of the high cost of cultivating the steep vineyards and the moderate prices of the wines. On top of this, some producers expaneded too far. Of course, all this has had consequences and they cn sometimes be tasted. In spite of this, we have no doubt that 2025 IS A SURELY A GREAT VINTAGE FOR THE MOSEL AND ITS SUB-REGIONS SAAR & RUWER! We strongly recommend you to try some of the wines below that most excited us, because they have a sensational aromatic depth and complexity. On top of this the vintage has a wonderfully refreshing acidity that turns those aromas and flavours into a firework display on the palate. These are life-affirming wines!

Who made the best wines in the Saar & Ruwer? In nearly every case it was producers who’s entire approach is uncompromising, and not just in 2025/26, but it’s been that way for very many years. I am thinking particularly of Maximin Grünhaus (von Schubert) in the Ruwer plus von Othegraven and Zilliken on the Saar. However, it was also good to taste the best village and single-vineyard wines from Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt in quite a few years. There were also some excellent wines from Piedmont and Schloss Saarstein.

The only down-side here was the more disappointing showing of the  dry Weissburgunder aka Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay wines. These are now important specialities for the Saar & Ruwer. However, there was no hint of the stylistic coherence that the dry Rieslings and Riesling Kabinett wines showed. That wouldn’t have been so bad if the quality had been better. To be frank, most of them tasted like these grapes had been treated as second-class citizens of  the region. Sad. Concentrate on the Rieslings! (SP)

The tasting of the 2025 Mosel Rieslings proved to be extremely revealing. This was because the selection included not only dry estate wines and (a few) single-vineyard wines, but also the wines that are the very heart of Mosel culture: Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese wines, both dry and sweet. These wines fully confirm Stuart’s assessment: “2025 IS SURELY A GREAT VINTAGE FOR THE MOSEL AND ITS SUB-REGIONS SAAR & RUWER!”

Here, high ripeness is balanced by a fabulously ripe, mineral acidity; the aromas are delicate and clear. Even Auslese or Goldkapsel Auslese wines have a seductive drinkability. For Andreas Adam of the A.J. Adam winery (Neumagen-Dhron), the year went “fantastically”; he was already raving about a vintage like 2015. Until the end of August, when heavy rain fell and rot spread rapidly. This forced him and his team to take immediate action. With success: A.J. Adam presented a fantastic collection in Mainz.

Clemens Busch (Clemens Busch Winery in Pünderich) paints a similarly positive picture: “Better than expected,” is his verdict. For in Pünderich, too, damp and muggy conditions took their toll on the ripening grapes. Yet even here, exceptionally good wines have been produced. Clemens Busch finds them slightly riper than the 2024 vintage and praises their acidity profile. He compares the GGs, which will be released in September and were not availabe for tasting in Mainz, with those of the great 2019 vintage.

Thomas Haag from Weingut Schloss Lieser (Thomas Haag) in Lieser strikes a similar note, but also emphasises that the harvest yield was lower due to the sudden risk of rot immediately before the harvest.

In any case, it is impressive to see the meticulousness and professionalism with which the top winemakers on the Mosel have worked. Climate change is no longer a spectre for winemakers in this part of the world. Our ratings speak for themselves. (FE)

66 wines tasted by Frank Ebbinghaus, including seven Riesling village wines (Ortsweine) with over 90, five Riesling Kabinett wines with 95 and five Riesling Spätlese wines with at least 95, plus  six Riesling Auslese wines with 96 to 99 points.

37 wines tasted by Stuart Pigott (SP) including two estate wines (Gutsweine) with 92, one Riesling village (Ortswein Alte Reben) wine with 94 and one with 93, plus one Riesling Kabinett with 96 and two with 95.
